Capítulo 7 de 24 · 2'25"
During the masked revels, Don John spreads a lie: the Prince has been wooing Hero for himself. Claudio believes it without checking, goes cold, and answers only with 'I wish him joy of her.' Benedick sees the damage and notes how love breaks friendship's rules.
Claudio Believes the Prince Betrayed Him
Claudio Sits Alone and Miserable
At the masked dance Don John tells Benedick that Claudio is in love with Hero and should be talked out of it. The same false report reaches Claudio as proof that Don Pedro has won Hero for himself. Claudio does not question it; he turns cold, and the Prince's friends find him deeply unhappy.
The scene is a sting. Don John uses the truth about Claudio's feelings — 'He is enamoured on Hero' — and bends it into a false story about Don Pedro, counting on one thing: that Claudio will believe a report that flatters his fear. The trap works because it travels through friends. Claudio never asks the Prince directly; he takes the rumour as proof and answers with 'I wish him joy of her,' which sounds like a blessing and is pure sulking. Benedick names the real subject when he says that 'friendship is constant in all other things save in the office and affairs of love.' The lie is small and cheap, but it turns on the oldest fault in the group: pride, jealousy, and the refusal to check. Watching Claudio fall for it is to watch the whole plot get its hook in him.

“He is enamoured on Hero. Dissuade him from her. She is no equal for his birth.”
Three short blows: he loves her, stop him, she is beneath him. The whole scheme lives in these words.

“Friendship is constant in all other things save in the office and affairs of love.”
A cold little maxim: friendship holds everywhere except in the business of love.

“- The prince hath got your Hero. - I wish him joy of her.”
Robbed of his love, he answers with a blessing; the bitterness sits just under the polite words.

“I found him here as melancholy as a lodge in a warren.”
A broken heart compared to a lone hut in a rabbit warren: bleak, funny and exact all at once.

Siguiente · 08speak poniardsLa escena: Beatrice Outwits BenedickDon John, using the confusion of the masked dance. He presents the Prince's courtship as proof that Don Pedro means to take Hero for himself.
He is already anxious about the match, and the report confirms his worst fear. Instead of asking the Prince directly, he accepts it and turns cold.
He is bitterly conceding that the Prince has won Hero. The words sound like congratulations, but they carry his anger and wounded pride.
He says friendship holds in everything except love, where friends become rivals. It is his comment on Claudio's sudden break with the Prince.
He goes off alone and becomes miserable. The Prince's friends later find him as gloomy as a lonely hut, and Beatrice's quarrel with him is mentioned too.
