Capítulo 12 de 13 · 4'57"
The mission's supposed best hope turns out to be a lie: "You faked all the data?" Around it, survival is the talk—"A machine doesn't improvise well because you can't program a fear of death"—and on Earth a family tears itself apart over who gets to leave.
Why Machines Can't Replace People
❝ Monólogo · 6 frases Mann Confesses
The pauses turn a duty-bound explanation into a reluctant confession.
On a frozen planet, a stranded scientist first argues that people beat machines because they fear death, then admits the place is barren and the data was faked. Meanwhile, on Earth, a family argues over a ship and whether their father is ever coming back, ending with one of them telling the other to get out.
The scientist's opening speech is a thesis about survival, and the scene then shows that thesis curdling into self-interest. His argument—"A machine doesn't improvise well because you can't program a fear of death"—sounds like praise of human courage until he admits the same instinct made him fake the data and wait to be rescued. He even names the mechanism: "I resisted the temptation for years." The film doesn't let him off, and it cuts the betrayal against a parallel one at home, where a family divides over a ship and over a father who never returned: "Dad's not coming back. He never was coming back. It's up to me." Survival, the scene suggests, can be noble or selfish, and the difference is who else gets to live.

When he is pressed, he confirms that the readings were faked and that the world has nothing on it—no surface worth landing on, only a place he could not survive.
One of them wants to take a ship for a plan that may save lives, while the other sees it as abandoning the people already struggling on Earth, and the argument ends with one telling the other to get out.
The scientist is confronted and called a coward, and the encounter turns into a struggle over the ship, which the crew need to continue the mission.
