His Girl Friday · 1940

Capítulo 18 de 18 · 4'04"

The desk flies open, Earl Williams is pulled out, and the Post claims the capture as its own. The sheriff tries to bury the three of them in charges and a fake 'imposter' story — "When you think you've licked the Post, it's time to get out" — but the reprieve arrives anyway.

Earl Is Captured in the Desk, explained

What happens

The desk is opened and Earl Williams is dragged out, caught in the act and handed over to the sheriff as the Post's prize. In the aftermath the paper and the sheriff trade threats, and a messenger named Pettibone turns up with a genuine reprieve, refusing the bribe that was meant to make it disappear.

What's really going on

After the capture, the movie stops pretending the press is a neutral observer. The Post doesn't just report the manhunt — it runs it, hides its source in a desk, and then broadcasts the arrest as its own victory. The sheriff's answer is pure power too: charges, threats and a suggestion that the messenger is a fraud. What undoes him is a single piece of paper carried by a man who refuses to be bought, and Walter's boast — "You forget the power that watches over the Post" — turns out to be less a bluff than a description. When the sheriff finally has to accept the reprieve, the language turns grandiose: 'Our commonwealth has been saved the necessity of shedding blood.' It is a happy ending built on blackmail, and the film knows it.

Key lines & what they mean

“I'll tell more. I could tell you why they did it.”
Mrs. Baldwin promising to expose the whole scheme. It's the loose end the paper and sheriff most need to silence.
“You forget the power that watches over the Post.”
Walter's warning to the sheriff: the paper has protectors bigger than the law, and it will use them.
“When you think you've licked the Post, it's time to get out.”
The sheriff's own rule of survival, said to the schemers: once you've beaten the paper, you're finished, so leave while you can.
“Our commonwealth has been saved the necessity of shedding blood.”
The pompous official line on the reprieve. It dresses up a saved execution — and a blackmail win — as civic virtue.

Theme

  • Power — The paper doesn't just cover the manhunt — it hides the fugitive and announces the capture as its own, and the sheriff can only answer with threats.
  • Corruption — Charges are invented, a messenger is branded a fraud, and a reprieve is almost buried, until the Post's leverage forces the law to stand down.

Preguntas frecuentes

La pregunta, luego la frase
How is Earl Williams finally caught?

Mrs. Baldwin gives away the hiding place, and the reporters tip the desk open. Earl is pulled out from inside it in the criminal courts building and handed to the sheriff.

Why won't Pettibone take the bribe?

He's the messenger who carried the real reprieve, and he refuses the city job. His refusal is what forces the sheriff to face the document instead of burying it.

Why does the sheriff call Pettibone an imposter?

If the reprieve is real, the sheriff and mayor lose their law-and-order election issue. Branding the messenger a fraud is the last way to make the document go away.

What does 'the power that watches over the Post' mean?

Walter's claim that the paper has political protection strong enough to beat the sheriff's office. By the end of the scene, the threat turns out to be real.

What happens to Walter and Hildy at the end?

The charges against them are dropped and the handcuffs come off. Walter uses the reprieve to win the round, and Hildy is still on the story rather than on a train.
