Mollie Rounds on the Reporters, explained

What happens

On the night before Earl Williams is to hang, his supposed girlfriend Mollie Malloy walks into the courthouse press room and confronts the reporters she says invented their romance. She tells them she met Williams only once, took him in out of the rain, and that he talked all night and never touched her.

What's really going on

The comedy is that Mollie is the only person in the room telling the truth, and nobody wants to hear it. The reporters need a story, not a fact: a woman who loved a condemned man sells papers, and so they wrote the love nest, the soul mate, the gallows wedding. When she says "He never once laid a hand on me," she is pleading her own respectability, but to the press room it is only a duller version of the story they already ran. Their reply, "Everybody knows you're his girlfriend," shows the machine cannot be argued with. Her curse — that lightning should strike them all dead — is the one language they understand, and even that becomes a joke. What she wants is to be believed; what they want is the next edition.

Key lines & what they mean

“Sitting with the angel of death, and you cracking jokes.”
Mollie says the men are joking while a man waits to die beside them; she names their cruelty as the execution approaches.
“It's a wonder lightning don't come down and strike you all dead.”
Her curse on the reporters: she thinks their lying deserves punishment from above, and only thunder would be fair.
“You crumbs have been making a fool out of me long enough.”
Mollie's accusation that the reporters have used her for a story and made her look foolish; crumbs is contemptuous for worthless men.
“He never once laid a hand on me.”
She defends her honor: Earl only talked with her all night and never touched her, despite what the newspapers printed.
“Because Earl treated me decent, and not like an animal.”
The reason she helped him: he was the one man who treated her with ordinary respect, which is why she now defends him.

Theme

  • Lies — Reporters turn Mollie's one kind night into a love story, and when she denies it they simply print the romance anyway.
  • Justice — A woman who showed a condemned man ordinary decency is punished by the press that decides what her story means.

Preguntas frecuentes

La pregunta, luego la frase
Why do the reporters keep taunting Mollie if they know they lied?

Because her denial is still usable copy. A girlfriend who says she hardly knew Earl is a smaller story than a girlfriend who loved him, so they mock her to keep the printed version alive and avoid admitting the paper made it up.

Is Mollie Malloy Earl Williams's girlfriend?

No. She says she met him once, the day before the shooting, when he was wandering in the rain. She took him home because it was warm, and he spent the night talking and left in the morning.

What does 'a pain in the neck' mean when the reporter says it here?

It is a dark joke. The phrase usually means a nuisance, but the reporter is using it for the gallows being prepared for Earl — the pain he will soon be in.

Why does Mollie curse the reporters with lightning?

She has run out of arguments. They will not believe her, they joke while a man waits to hang, so she calls on something above them to punish the cruelty she cannot.

Who is the 'boyfriend' the reporters keep mentioning?

Earl Williams, the condemned man the press room is waiting to see hanged. The reporters call him Mollie's boyfriend after their paper ran the invented romance between them.
