Owen and Caitlin Banter at Work, explained

What happens

Owen is supposed to be working at the water park but spends his break flirting with Caitlin, claiming she is playing hard to get and that his charm won her over. She tells him to come down and actually run the place. Outside, he runs into Duncan and talks about the heat.

What's really going on

The chapter introduces Owen, and it does so by letting him talk. He is charming and completely full of it, bragging that Caitlin is only being coy and that he "manipulated her with my sexual charisma" — a line so absurd that the film lets it stand as a joke about a certain kind of man. The joke works because Owen is also observant and kind: outside, he notices Duncan waiting and listens. Their exchange about the weather, "It is a hot summer," is the beginning of the friendship that will matter most to Duncan. Owen is the adult who talks to him like a person rather than a project.
