Pat Wears a Jersey to Dinner, explained

What happens

Pat goes to Ronnie's Sunday party wearing an Eagles jersey from Jake instead of the outfit his mother picked. He worries it was a mistake, but Ronnie tells him to come as he is. During dinner Ronnie admits he feels crushed by family, work, and the new baby. Later Pat meets Veronica's sister, Tiffany.

What's really going on

The scene works on two levels at once. On the surface it is a comedy of manners: Pat shows up in a football jersey to a dinner where he is expected to dress properly, and his mother and Ronnie's wife both have opinions about it. Underneath, it is about men who cannot say what is wrong. Ronnie has the house, the job, and the new baby, and he admits none of it makes him happy — 'I feel like I'm getting crushed' — while Pat, who tells him not to bring it up, is quietly rehearsing compliments for a wife who is not there. The jersey is Pat's attempt to be honest about who he is, and the dinner is everyone else's attempt to keep up appearances. Tiffany's arrival at the end sets the next half of the film in motion.

Key lines & what they mean

“Guest of honour. Come however you wanna come.”
Ronnie's reassurance that Pat can wear what he likes and still be welcomed.
“No disrespect, it's not personal, but this is the time to strike.”
Ronnie's blunt business advice, framing the downturn as an opportunity to buy cheap.
“I see you made an effort. I'm gonna be better with my wife.”
Pat rehearsing a compliment for Tiffany and vowing to treat his wife better in future, though he is really talking to himself about Nikki.
“You can't be happy all the time.”
The belief Pat is trying to correct when Ronnie repeats it: that constant unhappiness is simply normal.
“I made a mistake. I shouldn't have worn this.”
Pat's regret at showing up in the jersey once he feels out of place.

Theme

  • Identity — Pat insists on wearing the jersey that shows who he is, against the dressing-up everyone expects.
  • Parenthood — Ronnie admits the house, job, and new baby have left him feeling crushed rather than happy.
