Scarlet's Coronation Turns into a Chase, explained

What happens

At the coronation, Scarlet Overkill waves to the crowd and waits to be crowned Queen of England. The ceremony is underway when the Minions crash it, toppling the platform. In the chaos Scarlet is nearly hurt, blames them, and cancels the coronation, ordering the villains to attack.

What's really going on

Scarlet's coronation is the one moment she stops scheming and just enjoys herself: "I am so, so excited! This is perfect!" She compliments the organist, coos over a guest, and poses for her queen wave. That makes the reversal sharper. The Minions undo in seconds what she spent the film building, and she wastes no time rewriting the story — "He tried to kill me!" — even though they are the ones who lifted her out of danger. Her line "this is no longer a coronation! It is an execution!" does two things at once: it saves her dignity and turns the crowd into a mob. It's a villain refusing to accept an ending she did not choose.

Key lines & what they mean

“Villains, this is no longer a coronation! It is an execution!”
Scarlet cancels her own ceremony and converts it into a public execution order. It's how she turns humiliation into command.
“Come here, let me squeeze you! Oh, you are so squishy!”
Scarlet being affectionate to a guest, before anything goes wrong. The warmth makes her later rage funnier by contrast.
“I am so, so excited! This is perfect! (GIGGLING)”
Her unfiltered delight at the ceremony. She is, briefly, a happy fan rather than a scheming villain.
“Who is that organist? She is good! Right? She looks like an Edna.”
She chats about the musician like a talk-show host, improvising a name. It shows how relaxed and performative she is at the start.

Theme

  • Power — Scarlet is one line from the crown, and losing it turns her celebration into a public order to kill.
  • Revenge — Humiliated by the Minions, she reframes the accident as an assassination attempt and calls for their execution.

Preguntas frecuentes

La pregunta, luego la frase
Why does Scarlet cancel her own coronation?

The Minions wreck the ceremony and she almost gets hurt. Rather than admit her plan failed, she blames them, declares the event an execution, and sends the villains after them.

Did the Minions really try to kill Scarlet?

No. They accidentally cause the chaos, and one of them may even help her out of danger. Her accusation is her way of saving face in front of the crowd.

What does "I proclaim thee" mean?

It's an old, formal way to say "I declare you to be." The archbishop uses it to crown Scarlet, with "thee" as the archaic word for "you."

What happens after Scarlet calls it an execution?

The villains rush the Minions on her order. The Minions flee, and someone yells "Run, fellas, run!" as the chase begins.

Who is Edna?

Edna is the nickname Scarlet improvises for the organist during the ceremony. It isn't established earlier; she is just inventing a name while chatting.
