The Men Warn Jake
❝ Monologue · 18 lines The Truth About Alonzo
Alonzo takes Jake to a card game, but the players give Jake a warning: Alonzo played him for a fool, and there is nothing out there for him. Then they explain what is really happening — Alonzo killed a man in Vegas, owes the Russians a million, and robbed Roger for the cash. If he does not pay by midnight, he is dead.
The card game is where the film finally tells Jake what he is standing in. Alonzo is not a mentor but a man in trouble: he killed a man in Vegas, owes the Russians a million, and has until midnight to pay, so he robbed Roger for the cash. The men deliver it as gossip — “Alonzo, he's a hothead,” “I think Alonzo played you for a fool” — but the message is serious, and it explains every strange thing Alonzo has done all day. Jake is not being trained; he is being used as cover. The line “there is nothing out there for you” is the closest thing to kindness he gets, a warning that his future is already tied to a man who will not make it to morning.
