Earl Walks Into the Press Room, explained

What happens

The escaped Earl Williams walks into the press room with a gun and finds Hildy Johnson alone. She keeps him talking, tells him she is writing his story, and promises not to give him away. Then she phones Walter Burns to come at once and tells him Earl is in the room.

What's really going on

Earl comes in talking like a man who has stopped believing in anything. "You can't trust anybody in this crazy world," he says, and for a moment Hildy agrees with him: "I don't blame you. I wouldn't trust anybody either." That is the whole method of the scene. She does not argue him out of his suspicion; she joins it, and then gives him a reason to lower the gun — the story she is writing, "production for use." What looks like a hostage scene is really a seduction by understanding, done for a newspaper. When Mollie arrives and wants to save him, Hildy is already thinking about the reporters coming back, not about the man's life. Earl is wanted by everyone in the room, for different reasons.

Key lines & what they mean

“You can't trust anybody in this crazy world.”
Earl's reason for keeping the gun: after being hunted and lied about, he has decided that no one, not even a friendly reporter, can be believed.
“No, you're right. I don't want to kill anybody.”
Earl gives in to Hildy's insistence that he is not a killer; it is the moment his threat starts to fall apart.
“They got him surrounded. They'll shoot him down like a dog.”
Mollie brings word from the streets: the police have Earl surrounded and will kill him on sight rather than take him alive.
“I'm not afraid to die. I told the guy that when he handed me the gun.”
Earl says he has already accepted death, and that he even said so to the man who gave him the gun.
“Thanks for the roses. They were beautiful.”
Earl's quiet thanks to Mollie for flowers she sent him in jail — a human moment in the middle of the standoff.

Theme

  • Survival — Earl is hunted and exhausted, all he wants is to be left alone, and Hildy survives the gun by talking rather than fighting.
  • Trust — The scene turns on Earl's line that no one can be trusted, and on Hildy pretending to agree while waiting for her chance.

Questions, then the lines
Why does Earl Williams come to the press room?

He has escaped and needs somewhere to hide. He comes in on Hildy Johnson, who is alone, and holds her at gunpoint so she will not tell anyone where he is.

Does Hildy Johnson help Earl or turn him in?

She does not turn him in, but she does not purely help him either. She keeps him calm, hides him from the reporters, then calls Walter Burns to claim the story before anyone else can.

What does 'production for use' mean here?

It is the phrase attached to Earl's case, meaning goods should be made for people to use rather than for profit. Hildy repeats it to win his trust, and he recognizes it at once.

Why does Mollie Malloy come back to the press room?

She is looking for Earl after the jailbreak and wants to save him. She warns that the police have him surrounded and will shoot him down like a dog, then begs to be told where they are.

Who is the man who says he is not afraid to die?

Earl Williams. Cornered in the press room, he tells Hildy that he isn't afraid to die and that he said as much to the man who gave him the gun.
