What's really going on
The promise and the mob are the same idea turned inside out. David offers his son a guarantee no parent can actually keep — 'I won't ever leave you again' — and Billy answers with the one thing he is really afraid of: 'Promise you won't let the monsters get me.' We feel how much that promise means before we see how little control David has. When the group finally moves, Carmody does not attack the plan, she attacks the bond, repeating 'We want the boy.' Faith here is not comfort; it is a demand for blood, and the crowd's fear is what makes it dangerous.

The film spends its whole ending on that question. David stays with the boy to the very last scenes, and the horror comes from what staying faithful to him ends up costing.

Why do the other survivors turn on David and Billy?
Carmody convinces them that the people who refuse to submit to God brought the creatures on everyone. Fear does the rest, and the crowd follows her lead against David's family.
