What's really going on
Project Mayhem needs people who will stop thinking, so Tyler's first task is to delete the idea that they matter. "You are not a beautiful or unique snowflake," he says, and then, "You are the same decaying organic matter as everything else." The comfort of being special is replaced by the comfort of being nothing, which makes obedience easier. The recruits answer in military language: "Sir, the first rule of Project Mayhem is you do not ask questions, sir." The film then makes the cost visible through television coverage, where a commissioner promises a rigorous investigation while the members celebrate in another room. The army is built out of the very people consumer culture called unique.

このシーンについての質問
Why does Tyler reject some recruits before letting them join?
He is testing who will accept being judged and told no. Rejecting a man for being too old or too blond shows that the group, not the individual, decides who is worthy.
What is Project Mayhem?
It is Tyler's organized movement, grown out of Fight Club. Members live by strict rules, carry out vandalism and attacks, and are expected to obey without asking questions.
Why do the members celebrate after the explosion?
For them the destruction is proof the plan is working. The news calls it vandalism and promises an investigation, while the group treats the same event as a victory.
What does "space monkey" mean?
It is Tyler's name for a member who gives up his own life for the mission, like the monkeys sent into space as test subjects. It turns self-sacrifice into a job title.
Who is Bob in this scene?
Bob is the support-group friend later killed during a Project Mayhem operation. His name appearing here, next to the news coverage, marks how the movement eventually destroys its own members.
