Kong Opens the Bomb Bay Doors, Explained:harelips everybody on bear creek

The crew runs a flawless arming checklist — fuses, safeties, trigger overrides — until the bomb bay doors refuse to open. "The teleflex drive cable must be sheared away," someone reports, and nothing brings the circuits back. The captain decides to fix it by hand, telling the crew, "Stay on the bomb run, ace."

あらすじ

Aboard a B-52 heading for its target, the crew works through the final bomb run checklist: fusing circuits, safety releases, trigger overrides. When the bomb bay doors will not open, backup circuits and emergency power both fail. The captain orders a manual override, tells the crew to stay on the bomb run, and goes below to open the doors himself.

「Kong Opens the Bomb Bay Doors」を読み解く

What's really going on

On one level this is pure procedure: the crew recites each step in a flat, professional voice, which makes the machinery feel unstoppable. The tension comes from a single failed part. The doors will not open, and the men throw backup circuits, emergency power, and manual overrides at the problem. "The teleflex drive cable must be sheared away," one of them says, trying to diagnose it. The captain refuses to abort, telling the crew to hold course and going down to the bomb bay himself. His line — that he will open the doors "if it harelips everybody on bear creek" — is comic and chilling at once: the mission will go on no matter the cost.

Theme

DutyThe crew follows the checklist to the letter and refuses to abandon the mission, even when the machine fails.
AbsurdityMen calmly arm a doomsday bomb, and the captain promises to force the doors open no matter what.

  • One comic oath turns a dead end into a last stand.
  • Radio repetition builds tension better than shouting.

The teleflex drive cable must be sheared away.

A diagnosis from the crew: the only way to free the doors is to cut the drive cable.

Uh-- Still negative, sir. The operating circuits are dead, sir.

The failure report: the circuits are completely dead and the doors still will not work.

Stay on the bomb run, ace. I'm goin' down below and see what I can do.

The captain tells the crew to hold course while he goes below to fix the doors himself.

I'm gonna get them doors open if it harelips everybody on bear creek!

A folksy vow: he will force the doors open no matter what it costs.

このシーンについての質問

Why won't the bomb bay doors open?

The circuits fail and stay negative even after backup circuits and emergency power are switched in. The crew concludes the drive cable itself must be sheared away.

Why does the captain go down to the bomb bay?

The automatic systems have all failed, so he decides to open the doors by hand. He tells the crew to stay on the bomb run while he goes below.

What does the captain mean by "if it harelips everybody on bear creek"?

It is a folksy American oath meaning "no matter what happens." He is saying he will force the doors open even if it costs everything.

Why does the crew keep following the checklist?

They are trained to run the procedure exactly as written. The flat, calm delivery makes the arming of a nuclear bomb feel routine.
