「Guano Holds Mandrake at Gunpoint」を読み解く

What's really going on

The scene is a comedy of two men talking past each other while the world runs down. Mandrake has the one thing that could still save the day — a guess at the recall code — and he cannot make anyone listen, because the man with the gun has decided he is a suspicious foreigner in a strange uniform. Every reasonable explanation Mandrake offers only makes him sound more absurd: he must phone SAC, he is Ripper's executive officer, the general was mad. His warning lands as a plain fact: "Don't you know that general Ripper went as mad as a March hare..." Yet Guano's logic is unshakeable: a general is dead in the bathroom, so somebody must be to blame, and the odd Englishman will do. The scene shows how easily bureaucracy and suspicion can block the one voice that matters.

Theme

AbsurdityThe man who can stop the war is arrested as a suspicious foreigner and cannot make himself heard.
SatireMilitary logic blames the nearest odd man while the real catastrophe goes unchecked.

What the devil do you think you're doing? Who are you?

Mandrake's exasperation at being held up: he wants to know who this armed man is and why he is being treated as a prisoner.

This happens to be an r.A.F. Uniform, sir, and I am group captain lionel Mandrake.

His attempt to establish authority: he identifies his uniform and gives his full name and rank, hoping it will end the standoff.

I said, put your hands over your head and keep 'em there!

Guano's only answer, repeated: he will not discuss anything until Mandrake does exactly as ordered.

It's a variation on "peace on earth" or "purity of essence"!

The breakthrough Mandrake has been chasing: the recall code may be a version of the phrases Ripper kept repeating.

Don't you know that general Ripper went as mad as a March hare...

His warning that the general was insane and had sent the bombers to attack the Soviets — the fact Guano refuses to hear.

I got a lot of wounded men outside. Start walkin'.

Guano's closing line: he has wounded men to deal with and no more time for argument, so he marches Mandrake away.

このシーンについての質問

Why does Guano arrest Mandrake?

He finds General Ripper dead and treats the odd Englishman in a strange uniform as a suspect. When Mandrake tries to reach a phone and explain, Guano holds him at gunpoint.

What does 'as mad as a March hare' mean?

It means completely insane. Mandrake uses it to describe Ripper, who started the crisis, hoping Guano will understand why the recall code matters so much.

What is the recall code, and why does it matter?

It is the code that can call the attacking bombers back. Mandrake believes he has guessed it from phrases Ripper kept repeating: 'peace on earth' or 'purity of essence.'

Why won't Guano let Mandrake use the phone?

He does not believe Mandrake's story. A general is dead and the base is in chaos, so he assumes the stranger is somehow involved and must be kept away from the phone.

What is an executive officer?

It is the deputy who runs a commander's staff. Mandrake says he is General Ripper's executive officer to prove he belongs on the base and knows what is happening.
