Capítulo 5 de 20 · 4'31"
Harry asks Sally to dinner, “just friends,” then has to defend the rule he once insisted on: men and women can't be friends. His fix is a loophole — they can be friends if both are involved with other people — which he immediately dismantles himself, landing on “Men and women can't be friends. Where does that leave us?”

The Couple Who Remarried at a Funeral
At a diner, Harry suggests dinner “just friends.” Sally reminds him of his own earlier claim that men and women cannot be friends, so he proposes an amendment: they can, as long as both are involved with other people. He then argues the exception apart himself, until the rule stands again exactly where it started.
The argument is not really about friendship; it is Harry and Sally negotiating whether they are allowed to want each other. Harry's amendment is a compromise he pretends is logic: friends are safe only if the romance is already taken, which is another way of admitting the attraction is always there. He even supplies the counter-argument himself — an involved partner will accuse you of being secretly attracted, “which you probably are” — and then shrugs with “Who are we kidding?” Sally's silence is the real answer. The rule and its amendment only exist because both of them keep circling the thing neither will say out loud.

They can't be friends. Unless both of them are involved with other people. Then they can. This is an amendment to the earlier rule. If they're in relationships... the pressure of possible involvement is lifted. That doesn't work either, because then the person you're involved with... can't understand why you need to be friends... with the person you're just friends with. Like it means something is missing from the relationship. Then when you say, "Nothing is missing from the relationship"... the person you're involved with accuses you... of being secretly attracted to the person you're just friends with... which you probably are. Who are we kidding? Which brings us back to the rule before the amendment: Men and women can't be friends. Where does that leave us?
