On the surface he is explaining how he became the Dread Pirate Roberts. Underneath, the name is a mask passed down to keep people afraid. "I shall retire and hand the name over to someone else" comes only after they are together; in the cabin the old man says the ship will be inherited.

How Westley Became Roberts, explained

What happens

After the Fire Swamp, someone claims "And I, as you know, am Roberts." For three years he was a valet, told each night he would most likely die by morning. Rich and retiring, Roberts admits in the cabin, "I am not the Dread Pirate Roberts," and says the ship will be inherited. Handing the name over comes later, once they are together.

What's really going on

The confession is not that one legend stepped out of a story. "I am not the Dread Pirate Roberts," the previous man says, then "My name is Ryan." Ship and fear have already changed hands: Ryan inherited them from Cumberbund, who was not the real Roberts either. What matters is "inspiring the necessary fear," because "no one would surrender to the Dread Pirate Westley." They take on a new crew, he stays as first mate calling him Roberts, and leaves once the crew believes. The nightly "I'll most likely kill you in the morning" is how the valet became a friend, not how the name moved. Inheritance is the cabin sentence. "Hand the name over" comes later, once they are together, when the teller himself means to retire.

Key lines & what they mean

“Fire Swamp certainly does keep you on your toes.”
The swamp they have just survived allows no slip. It is a relieved remark about staying alert, said before he points to the ship.
“And I, as you know, am Roberts.”
Right after this claim he calls the reversal one of life's odd turns. The listener is treated as someone who already knows he is Roberts.
“Sleep well. I'll most likely kill you in the morning."”
This is the line he says Roberts repeated for three years, a good night stapled to a threat. They became friends anyway, so it landed as ritual, not a plan he carried out.
“I inherited the ship from the previous Dread Pirate Roberts, just as you will inherit it from me.”
In the cabin the man who has just said his name is Ryan tells the listener he inherited the ship and that the listener will inherit it from him. This is not the later retirement line.
“You see, no one would surrender to the Dread Pirate Westley.”
The useful name is Roberts. A title with Westley in it would not make anyone give up, so the mask has to stay when the man changes.
“Except now that we're together, I shall retire and hand the name over to someone else.”
The teller says this only after they are together. He, the one who has been Roberts since the new crew believed, will retire and pass the name to someone else. The cabin used inherit.

Theme

  • Identity — The Roberts name is a mask passed from one man to the next so victims feel the necessary fear.
  • Secrets — In the cabin he admits he is not really Roberts, that his name is Ryan, and that the ship was inherited.

Preguntas frecuentes

La pregunta, luego la frase
Why does the captain finally tell Westley who he really is?

He had grown so rich he wanted to retire. In the cabin he admits "I am not the Dread Pirate Roberts" and says "you will inherit it from me." "Hand the name over" is only the later line, when the teller himself retires after they are together.

Why say he would most likely kill him in the morning for three years?

"Three years he said that," always beside a good night and a word of praise. The same account says it was a fine time and that they became friends, so the threat stayed as a ritual rather than a plan carried out.

Why would no one surrender to the Dread Pirate Westley?

He explains the name is what inspires the necessary fear. "You see, no one would surrender to the Dread Pirate Westley." The title has to stay Roberts, or the fear fails when the man underneath changes.

Who held the name before the teller?

The man in the cabin says "My name is Ryan" and that he inherited the ship from the previous Dread Pirate Roberts, who was not the real one either. That man's name was Cumberbund.
