A Detour on the Highway of Life
Isaac, in bed with Tracy, tells her he thinks he is in love with her. Then he spends the rest of the scene taking it back: she is a kid, she has her whole life ahead of her, and she should not be tied down at her age. He suggests a movie the next day, but sends her home for the night.
The scene is a masterclass in having it both ways. Isaac says, "I think I'm in love with you," and then spends the rest of the conversation explaining why the feeling should not count: she is a kid, she should not get hung up on one person, and he is a detour rather than a destination. The cruelty is wrapped in kindness, which is exactly what makes it hard to answer. His joke about breaking records as long as the cops do not burst in is the same move: turn something serious into a gag so he never has to be responsible for it. Tracy, meanwhile, asks the direct questions he keeps dodging, and when he finally sends her home, he offers tomorrow's movie as compensation. The scene is affectionate and cowardly at once.

Siguiente · 04overratedLa escena: Isaac and Mary Argue About ArtHe says he thinks he is in love with her, but every other line warns her not to count on it. The scene keeps the confession and the retreat in the same breath, so the audience has to decide which one to believe.
He says he does not want her to get into the habit of staying over, because one night becomes two and then she lives there. Underneath the excuse is his fear of being tied down.
A detour is a temporary route you take before rejoining the main road. By calling himself one, Isaac admits he is not her destination, only a stretch she will drive through.
She wants a straight answer about his feelings, and he keeps turning the conversation into jokes or lectures. Her questions are the only honest pressure in the scene.
Isaac is 42 and Tracy is 17, and the gap is the subject of the scene. He brings up her age constantly, which is his way of justifying a relationship he knows is questionable.
