Blanc Explains the Vial Switch, explained

What happens

Blanc reconstructs the night for Ransom: sneaking past the security camera, climbing the trellis, swapping the liquids in the two medication vials and taking the lifesaving antidote so the slayer rule would void the new will. Marta realizes that when she mixed up the vials she switched them back, giving Harlan the correct dose. Harlan was fine; the death was suicide. Ransom denies it all.

What's really going on

The reveal here is that the murder was never a murder. Blanc lays out a scheme built on a legal loophole — if the nurse could be blamed for Harlan's death, the slayer rule would cancel the new will and the money would flow back to the family. The irony is that Marta's mistake undid the crime. By mixing up the vials and switching them back, she "gave him the correct medication," and Harlan died exactly as the scene keeps insisting: by his own hand. That is why the sharpest line is aimed at Ransom, who has just been caught out. He protests that they have "a shred of evidence," but the evidence is sitting in the house in the form of an old woman's memory. What the scene does is move guilt from the person who looks guilty to the person who engineered the situation.

Key lines & what they mean

“That is the truth.”
Blanc's flat statement that his version, not Ransom's denials, matches what actually happened.
“and we are not finished untangling it.”
His admission that the case is still not fully solved even after the central scheme is exposed.
“You gave him the correct medication because you are a good nurse.”
The turn of the case: Marta's competence, not her error, is what saved Harlan's dose that night.
“The cause of death was truly, solely suicide, and you are guilty of nothing but some damage to the trellis”
The verdict that clears Marta of everything except climbing in and damaging the property.

Theme

  • Deception — Ransom's careful plan is undone by Marta's honest mistake, exposing the scheme behind the suicide.
  • Justice — The legal trick meant to steal the inheritance instead pins the crime on the one who planned it.

Preguntas frecuentes

La pregunta, luego la frase
How did Ransom try to get the inheritance?

He switched the liquids in the two medication vials and took the lifesaving antidote, so Marta would be blamed for killing Harlan. Under the slayer rule, that would void the new will and return his share.

Why did the plan fail?

Marta unknowingly switched the vials back when she got them mixed up, so she gave Harlan the correct medication. He was perfectly fine that night, and his death was later a suicide.

What evidence points to Ransom?

Greatnana Wanetta saw someone climbing down the trellis and asked, "Ransom? Are you back again already?" — meaning he had already been at the house that night, before the will reading.

Is Marta guilty of anything?

Only property damage and a few amateur theatrics. Blanc says the cause of death was solely suicide, and that if Harlan had listened to her and called an ambulance, he would be alive today.
