Peter proposes and Zooey says yes, then puts her friends on speakerphone to spread the news. The surface is pure celebration, but a line like "He works two cubicles away from me" hints at the real problem the film is about: Peter has no close male friend to stand beside him.
Peter's Proposal and the Announcement
Peter Realizes He Has No Best Friend
Peter Klaven proposes to his girlfriend Zooey after eight months of dating, and she happily accepts. She immediately calls her friends Hailey and Denise on speakerphone to share the news. Later, over dinner with his parents and brother, it becomes clear that Peter has never had close male friends, which sets the movie's search for a best man in motion.
On the surface this is a happy engagement scene, but the movie is quietly setting up its real subject. When Zooey asks Peter who he'll tell, the only names that come up are a coworker and a fencing buddy, and Peter admits, "He's not really a 'call right away' kind of friend." That one line is the whole premise. Dinner with his family makes it worse: asked about his childhood friends, nobody can name one, and his father insists Peter "always connected better with women." Peter is getting married with no one to stand beside him.

Siguiente · 02take the leapLa escena: Peter Misses the Joshua Tree TripShe's excited and wants to share the engagement immediately. Putting Hailey and Denise on speakerphone lets them hear everything live, which is also why the scene turns chaotic and funny.
Yes, that's the point of the dinner. Peter moved constantly as a kid because his father worked for IBM, so he never kept long-term friends, while his brother Robbie always made some. The rest of the film is about Peter fixing that.
They're close friends with no filter. As soon as the engagement comes up, they drag Zooey's sex life into the conversation, bring up the hot tub in Mexico, and joke that she was old-fashioned in Santa Barbara.
He wants to build a neighborhood-style dining and retail area, possibly with a second location for Zooey's store. He can't develop it right away because the land is pricey, but selling the Ferrigno estate would cover a down payment.
Gil is someone Peter fences with. Peter says he's not a "call right away" kind of friend, meaning they're activity buddies rather than the person you phone the second you get engaged.
