Jeff Spots the Missing Handbag, explained

What happens

From his window, Jeff watches Thorwald pack up to leave for good. Lisa notices that Mrs. Thorwald's favorite alligator handbag has been left behind, jewelry inside. Jeff argues that a woman going anywhere but the hospital would take her makeup and jewelry — so the wife never left on a trip. Later Lisa decides to stay the night.

What's really going on

The handbag is the whole scene in miniature. To Jeff it is proof: "Women don't keep their jewelry in a purse getting all twisted and scratched and tangled up." A favorite bag that goes everywhere stays behind only if the woman never knew she was going anywhere — and only her husband would know that. Lisa supplies the observation, Jeff turns it into a theory, and together they build the case against Thorwald. But the scene is also a courtship running on the same energy: the sharper Jeff's detective work gets, the more Lisa wants in. When she offers to trade her 'feminine intuition for a bed for the night,' the line is both flirtation and a promise to stay. Real danger sits just across the courtyard, and the film lets romance and suspense share the same window.

Key lines & what they mean

“That couldn't have been Mrs. Thorwald, or I don't know women.”
Jeff's confident claim that the woman witnesses saw was not Thorwald's wife — he trusts his read on women enough to stake the theory on it.
“I'd like to see your friend's face when we tell him.”
Lisa looks forward to proving Detective Doyle wrong, mixing the case with a little personal satisfaction.
“My feminine intuition for a bed for the night.”
Her playful bargain — she offers the insight that cracked the case in exchange for staying with Jeff overnight.
“Where does a man get inspiration to write a song like that?”
A light aside about the songwriter neighbor, shifting the mood from detection back to ordinary courtyard life.

Theme

Preguntas frecuentes

La pregunta, luego la frase
What is the handbag clue?

Mrs. Thorwald's favorite alligator handbag — the one she always kept on her bedpost — is left behind, with her jewelry inside. Jeff says a woman would never leave those unless she never knew she was going away.

Why is Jeff sure the woman leaving was not Mrs. Thorwald?

Because the handbag and jewelry Mrs. Thorwald always kept close were left behind. Jeff argues no woman leaves those unless she never knew she was going anywhere, and only her husband would know that.

Why does Lisa decide to stay the night?

She gets drawn into the investigation and offers to trade her 'feminine intuition' for a bed for the night. She also has the whole weekend off.

What does 'live out of a suitcase' mean?

It means to live with only the belongings you can carry, always traveling. Jeff used it earlier to describe his life as a photographer, and Lisa throws it back at him.

Who is Doyle?

Thomas Doyle, Jeff's friend and a police detective. Jeff calls him about the Thorwald case, but Doyle is skeptical and later dismisses the theory.
