Capítulo 6 de 19 · 2'56"
On the surface it's a pre-race pep talk: Michael tells the team what the sport demands and that they came to win. Then Olivia admits why she is really here. "I'm here because of him, and every day here is a day not with him," she says, and the race becomes something to earn.
❝ Monólogo · 7 frases captain's pre-race speech
Six stacked lines build from acceptance to resolve, and the last one flips second place into a promise.
The Team Huddles Before the Start
Before the start, Michael gathers his team and lays out the first rule of adventure racing: anything can happen. He tells them they must accept whatever comes and keep pushing, and that they did not come for second place. Olivia then reveals her father is dying of cancer and says the race has to be worth it for him.
The pep talk and the confession are doing different jobs. Michael's speech is about will — "We push, and we suffer, and we win" — and about refusing to settle, since "we didn't come here for second place." Olivia's news changes what that will is for. "I'm here because of him, and every day here is a day not with him," she says, which turns the race into a debt she owes her father, not a goal she chose. Michael catches it immediately and reframes the team around it: "For him," then "For us. For everyone important to us." The closing image, the team in a huddle before the gun, works because the stakes are now personal for everyone, not just athletic.

All right, listen. We all know the first rule of adventure racing is anything can happen out there. No matter what we encounter, we accept it, and we embrace it, and we keep going. We push, and we suffer, and we win. That's gonna be the difference, all right? Who's gonna want it more. We didn't come here for second place. We came here for first.

He is setting the team's standard: they are not racing to finish or to place, but to win. It is the line that turns a long, punishing event into a single goal.
He is older, his knee is bad, and his sponsors left after he took time off. He tells the team this is his last chance and theirs too, which is why he pushes the theme of legacy.
Because every day she spends racing is a day she is not with her dying father. For the sacrifice to be bearable, the race has to end in something meaningful — a win, or at least a legacy.
