Capítulo 5 de 10 · 3'34"
Lisa plays her guitar for Ted and sings 'River of Jordan,' while Ted's mind drifts back to the Peace Corps years he spent with Elaine. The gentle song and the increasingly absurd story of the Molombo tribe sit side by side, and the contrast is the joke.
Ted Explains Why He Joined the Peace Corps
Ted's Peace Corps Story
On the plane, Lisa introduces herself with a guitar and offers to sing. She performs 'River of Jordan' for Ted, who begins narrating the past: after the war he joined the Peace Corps with Elaine and was assigned to an isolated tribe, the Molombos, who had never seen Americans.
The scene's trick is emotional whiplash. Lisa's song is sincere — 'I traveled the banks of the River of Jordan' — a folk tune about finding yourself, and the film plays it straight. Then Ted's flashback turns that sincerity into comedy: he says he joined the Peace Corps because 'I just wanted to get as far away from things as possible,' and the noble-sounding project becomes a man fleeing his life. The tribe story grows steadily more absurd, from the Supperware pitch to calisthenics and 'advanced competitive theory.' Yet one line keeps the whole thing from turning cruel: 'At first they didn't know what to think of us.' It is Ted's memory, half rose-tinted and half self-parody, and the film lets the song's earnestness and the story's silliness coexist without choosing between them.

“You must understand, these people had been completely isolated from civilization.”
He asks for understanding first, then states the fact, which makes the odd memory sound like a lecture.
Formal
“I was patient with them, and they were eager to learn.”
The balanced clauses flatter both sides at once, so the modesty quietly turns into a boast.

“At first they didn't know what to think of us.”
A plain opener that sets up the change from suspicion to trust.

It means to make your money go further — here, to make food last and cost less. It comes from a parody Supperware advertisement inside Ted's story.
An isolated tribe Ted and Elaine were assigned to in the Peace Corps. Ted says they had never seen Americans before.
It slides from sincere to ridiculous — calisthenics, game skills, 'advanced competitive theory.' The film never asks us to decide, only to enjoy the buildup.
